The Ultimate Vacation Photo Backup System

These days it seems like everyone is a photographer. Whether it’s a smartphone camera, a point and a shoot, or professional DSLR most people take at least one of them on the holidays. Taking photos is a great way to remember the moments of life traveling and share them with friends. However, losing your camera, memory card, or hard drive failure is just some of the ways you can lose your pictures forever. I cannot imagine that Tanzania, Cambodia, Haiti, or even a family together cannot imagine losing my favorite pictures together. It doesn’t need to be and how to keep all your holiday photos backup here.

Golden Backup Roll: Repeat everything!

What does this principle mean? It’s easy, you need to back up your photos in at least two places.

That is, you will need. Choose 2 options as your backup methods:

• Laptop
• Multiple memory cards
• External Hard Drive/Large Flash Drive (32GB or More)
• Backup Online (Cloud Storage)

Option 1: Backup photos on your laptop

Every day You will probably take away a number of new photos on your vacation. As soon as you go back to your hostel/hotel, backup your photos on your laptop. Do it daily, though it seems to a limit. It will only take a few minutes and this is the easiest form of backup.

Here are two reasons why you should have a daily backup:

1. Backup daily is faster than a bulk uploading at the end of your journey
2. You will never know that this is the last backup because the next day he may lose or stole the camera

Option 2: Place your photos on your memory card

Remember, you want to keep your photos backup in two places (minimal) so if you don’t have an external hard drive for internet access or other backups. Don’t delete Pictures of your memory card. If you have a huge memory card, it will probably not be filled by the end of the journey (unless you take a crazy amount of photos) and if that happens, bring the extra. They are very cheap these days and have more than one hand.

Cycle your memory card daily. That way, if you lose a memory card or your camera, you are not losing a week’s price photos. If you bring 3 memory cards, use a different card daily.

When you are photographing your computer and you are asked if you want to “keep photos” or “delete photos”, you should always keep them.

It acts as another backup system (Option 1 your laptop hard drive). You can argue that your memory card will be filled or it is full which is a good point. However, you want to bring a multiple and big -capable memory card with you on the holidays. These days they are very cheap for a lot of storage. Shooting with your DSLR can really take place so 64GB128GB memory cards are better than you are never out of place.

However, if you plan to use cards as backup storage, it is a good idea to rotate 16 GB cards. The choice is yours and the prices are very different with these cards.

Memory cards

Keep your memory card in a safe place when you are not using them. I put them in small plastic cases with which they come and then put them all in a plastic bag. I put it in my bag in a dedicated inner pocket. They must be protected.

Protect your pictures

Option 3: Portable Hard Drive BackP

If you have a laptop and now all the pictures are uploaded to it, it’s time to return these images to the external hard drive. This will produce another backup of your photos or the third if you will put them on your memory card as I have suggested. If you have only one memory card, then this double backup system will allow you to free your memory card.

Sustainable portable hard drives

There are cheap options but cheap hard drives are famous for crashing and short life period. A little extra money will save you in a long time. 500 GB for all your photos and videos on the holidays is more than enough. If you take a lot of HD video, I will consider getting photos and video backing l 500 500 GB or 1 TB drive.

If you don’t have a laptop

Take your external hard drive to a nearby internet cafe or to your hotel’s business center and use their computer to back up your photos. Even you don’t have to access the Internet for it so if you are lucky they will let you do it for free.

Option 4: Backup online

If you lose your camera or gear bag, you are basically out of luck. All your backup is on physical devices so you also need to backup. There are many online backup options. One option is to upload them to your Flickr Photo Stream. A Pro account is worth $ 20/year.

Another online option is online backup such as socks or dropbox. The only problem here is that you will use your free storage very fast. Dropbox free storage starts with 2GB which is not bad but you can upgrade 1 TB (1000) GB in $ 9.99/month. Another excellent way is to invite friends only and when they sign up for the dropbox you get more free storage ups in 18 GBSO signups. 😉 😉

I shoot hundreds of shots in one day and sometimes in more than 1000 time. However, if you want to spread around them, there are many free solutions.

Smart phone backup

If you are in your home country and you have a regular data plan or easily access to Wi -Fi Cloud storage, backup on our phone these days has been made easy. The iPhone You can easily use i -cloud storage and will automatically return everything. If you run away, IC Cloud storage projects are available for reasonable rates.

Recommendation

I recommend at least 2 of them backups and if you have time, do them all. Adding online backups is a good idea if you lose your physical storage devices.

I have used all these backup methods in the past. My favorite is just laptop/external scroll since its simpler and faster.

Remember, bring more than one memory card and never refine them on the road. Buy at least 250 GB external hard drive to bring with you. If you do not travel with a laptop, all of this can be done using their computers at your hotel/hostel. It doesn’t matter if you are a supporter shooter with an expensive DSLR or a passenger taking a point and shoot, you never want to lose your photos from vacation. Back up and you will never need to worry about it.
