Milwaukee District Attorney John Chisholm said Wednesday his office is reviewing the death of D’Vontaye Mitchell as a homicide case. Mitchell died on June 30 after an encounter with hotel security guards at the Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee.The Milwaukee Police Department is actively investigating the incident. District Attorney Chisholm’s office met with Attorney William Sulton, representing Mitchell’s family, to provide an update. During the meeting, Sulton viewed video footage and other evidence related to the investigation.”Mr. Mitchell’s death is a tragedy, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family,” District Attorney Chisholm said in a statement.Chisholm said his office is reviewing Mitchell’s death as a homicide case and all aspects of the case, including Mitchell’s death and use of force by hotel personnel, will be closely examined. Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said they are awaiting autopsy results to determine the exact cause of Mitchell’s death.”My condolences to the family and the loss of life is a loss of life. But let’s set the record straight so that we don’t have unnecessary chatter or things going out there in the community irresponsibly when we all know what the true facts are. Thank you,” Norman said.Mayor Cavalier Johnson said he’s been in touch with Mitchell’s family.A spokesperson for the Hyatt issued an updated statement Wednesay saying, “Hyatt joins the family of D’Vontaye Mitchell in their calls for transparency, accountability and justice for this senseless tragedy. We believe that the employees of Aimbridge Hospitality who were involved should be terminated and that criminal charges should be filed.”
